Pre-Conference Workshop

Monday 14 November
Organised by Gas Strategies
15:00 – 18:00

Risks for future development of European Gas Infrastructure

Gas Strategies will be leading a discussion workshop on the key issues facing gas infrastructure projects, investors and governments across Europe. Drawing upon our extensive experience and commercial insights of the European energy market, we will address the following questions:

  • What is the future role of gas in the transition?
  • What does this mean for future infrastructure requirements?
  • What will need to change to create the right incentives for future investment?
  • Are we looking at a retreat from market mechanisms to planned development?
  • What will be required from Policy / Makers and Regulators?

Workshop background

Europe is set on the path of decarbonising its energy economy by 2050 in order to mitigate the effects of global climate change and create a secure and sustainable energy supply. Despite general agreement on the long term goal there is considerable uncertainty on how to manage the transition from the current energy system to the future in a manner that is both affordable and realistic.

As a low emission hydro-carbon natural gas could clearly play a substantial role as both a short term bridging and longer term transition fuel providing security and reliability in an energy system that will be increasingly reliant on intermittent and non-despatchable sources of renewable energy.

Whilst industry, national governments and the European Union recognise the importance of gas, the current market mechanisms are not generating the signals required to produce investment in the new gas infrastructure – infrastructure which is essential for ensuring the continued supply of gas, and enabling its anticipated role in the future energy mix.
